Dangwa Flower Market: A Special Delivery
Also known as the Bulaklakan ng Maynila, Dangwa Flower Market is best place to get flowers at any time of the year because of the unique collection of blossoms that come at a good price. There is definitely no other place like Dangwa in the Metro which makes it extra special.

The open-air flower market is three streets long and is filled with stall upon stall of vendors selling bundles of flowers of different kinds. Discovered at the year 1976, due to the presence of the Dangwa Tranco company which delivered fresh flowers at the time, thus marking it a known spot for selling afforable fresh flowers and the name Dangwa Flower Market was created.
Dangwa Flower Market is the ultimate “go to” place for Filipinos to purchase flowers. It provides convenience for the consumers by giving them a wide location wherein they may look at the collection of blossoms that come from different provinces of the Philippines. Flowers are a necessity in most events whether it may be joyous celebrations from weddings or anniversaries to sending your condolences to a loved one who passed away. A celebration is not complete without flowers and evidently, to purchase flowers in the city is high-priced. Especially during peak seasons such as Valentine’s day, All Soul’s Day, and Mother’s day, the prices of flowers you would find in flower shops and in malls in the city shoot up. Unlike in Dangwa, the prices would also shoot up during peak seasons but the price would still be considered reasonable most especially when you buy flowers in bundles or packages. Not only does Dangwa sell flowers individually, but you may also buy them in packages and bouquets. For any occasion, Dangwa is able to supply one’s flower demands and may package them in any way the customer wants. For example, if you are planning to give your loved one a bouquet for Valentine’s day, you may ask them to design the bouquet however you would want it to look like. Mix-matching of flower selections is allowed and they may package it of your choice. The flower stalls in Dangwa have a wide variety of flowers such as roses, sunflowers, chocolate flowers, carnations, tulips, liliums, gerberas, malaysian mums, cattleyas, orchids, statice, stargazers and many more. Because of this, Dangwa also gives its consumers a variety of deals to consider when purchasing flowers. Dangwa is known to be the best place to acquire flowers but little does the consumers know the long process these vendors and store owners have to go through to produce the best, yet inexpensive flowers to sell to their consumers.
Dangwa shop owners and vendors work really hard to maintain their flowers. These flowers are brought to Dangwa Flower Market via trucks from different parts of the Philippines like Baguio city, La Trinidad, Benguet, and Cebu city. Sometimes these flowers are even imported with the use of airplanes from countries such as Thailand and Ecuador. These flowers are being planted and grown in the different parts of the country to ensure their full growth due to the non-polluted air they have in the provinces. Once these flowers mature enough to be picked and sold, they are immediately brought and shipped to Dangwa because the lifespan of flowers do not last long and as a result, should be sold as soon as possible. According to the florists in Dangwa, the average lifespan of most of the flowers last up to 2 weeks and then after a period of 2 weeks, the flowers start to wilt and are no longer fresh. Delivery of the flowers from designated provinces to Dangwa would be around 5-8 PM daily which is why the best time to go to Dangwa to buy fresh flowers would be around that time because the flowers are newly delivered and still very fresh. Once the flowers are brought to the shops, they are promptly cut and soaked in water to extend the life of the flowers and to keep it from wilting. During the summer, these flowers, depending on the kind are stored in coolers with ice to prevent damage of the flowers because of the immense heat the Philippines experiences during the months of late March to late May. The following day, the flowers are to be arranged and assorted by their kind and some would be fixed in groups which would then cost less when bought in groups. The prices of the flowers range according to their size and kind. The bigger and imported flowers cost more than those of which that are smaller and cost less to deliver. When the flowers are not bought and are no longer fresh to sell, the vendors would just throw these flowers away since they are no longer capable of being bought and have no more value.
Being open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, Dangwa vendors do experience difficulty in their day to day livelihood. The lack of infrastructure in the Philippines really slows down the pace of the businesses of these shop owners for the reason that if our country had wider and more stable roads, it would be easier for the flowers to be delivered to Sampaloc, Manila, where Dangwa Flower Market is situated. As a result, businesses would be faster and if the flowers are delivered as soon as possible, then more money would come in and would circulate. However, due to the relaxed system we have in our country, these deliveries just need to compromise with the infrastructure we have as of the moment. In relation to that, parking is also very difficult to attain in Dangwa. During a visit to Dangwa in the past month, I was shocked to find out that there were no parking slots for Dangwa Flower Market alone. There would be parking in some fast foodchain restaurants but the lack of a parking lot makes it really difficult for consumers to go there and check out the blossoms because of the hassle they will experience. Another problem Dangwa florists and shop owners experience is despite the little income the shop receives, they still have to pay tax to the government leaving them with less than what they work for. Flower shops in Dangwa do not earn as much because flowers are not a basic necessity in life, therefore it is not much of a stable business as compared to those companies that buy and sell food and/or clothes. Moreover, peak seasons of flowers only happen only a few times in a year. If the vendors are lucky then they are also able to supply flowers for certain and big events. Finally, due to immense traffic we experience here in Metro Manila, time and gas are being wasted in the process of delivery rather than getting the flowers delivered at a faster time. The Philippines is known for the unbearable traffic. Last year, Manila was even named “Worst city to drive on earth” because taking a car in Manila would even prolong the time to take you to wherever you need to go. Because of this, the whole process of delivery is being delayed and gas is also being wasted.
There is more to just fragrant and beautiful flowers in Dangwa Flower Market. It is a very convenient place for consumers because of the wide variety of flowers available. These flowers are well-maintained and taken care of by the vendors to assure the quality of the flowers. Despite that, the florists of Dangwa Flower Market do experience difficulty in their everyday lives because of some factors. However, they do not let these difficulties affect the quality of their flowers. I highly suggest that you go visit Dangwa Flower Market once in your life because it definitely beats all your trips to the flower shops at the mall or near your Church. It’s a good story to tell and definitely a good experience to share.
Entertaining article that goes into exhaustive, yet still breviloquent detail- appreciate your extensive research!
ReplyDeleteYour essay/blog sure has been researched well, although sadly I suppose not your entire research was utilized well. When it comes to the selling point of the Dangwa Flower Market, it seems as if you cut it short near your ending. You focused way too much on the problems of the market like parking spaces, etc. You may have described the full economic effect on these flowers the business of selling them, yet you didn't placate enough importance to them. The description of what needed to be your aim for the topic was to express through more vivid and live words the process of and meaningfulness of the Dangwa Flower Market. Although as a whole your work still stands to be good (but not so flowery) in it's entirety. Way to go! I'll definitely check out the market in the not so distant future!
ReplyDeleteHey Vinnie I like the idea you brought up do you think flower shops in malls can be compared to flowe shops in dangwa tho because they both target two different target markets?

ReplyDeleteI personally have never been to dangwa, however this blog seems to be a good description of what I'd expect when I get there. The blog could have been better written, by this I mean that its writing style seems very mechanic, there isn't much personal experience in it. However, it does show the struggle of the vendors of Dangwa, having pro-labor sentiments, I would say this is a satisfactory description of situation of the vendors. -Dee, En 12 R45-
ReplyDeleteThe essay was both well written and well researched. It was not biased, giving both the positive side and the negative side of visiting Dangwa. It also gives information on Dangwa, like its location and its operating hours. Although it could have been described more so as to give the reader a picture of how it really looked like and not just by showing pictures, it was still a very inviting essay that will surely make any reader want to go to Dangwa and buy flowers for any occasion. -Karen Go (EN 11 E13)
ReplyDeleteIt is evident that you've done extensive research, although your thesis statement seems to focus more on the problems than the vivid picture of the place. You could've added more descriptive and affirmative phrases to bolster your supposed thesis statement. Overall, the essay is cohesive, and it encouraged readers to read through the whole composition; but there are minimal errors (e.g. parallelism) -Diane Lee (EN 11 E12)
ReplyDeleteThe essay in its entirety was written well. It was informative as to how the Dangwa Market was created and how it flourished into what it is today. The beginning centered on the market and its resilient workers who made the flowers we purchase seem so fresh and outstanding for us to marvel upon. Then continued to state the everyday experiences and problems that occur and the troubles the business/industry face. Albeit on point, the ending was quite misleading as it moved from Dangwa to Manila’s heavy traffic as its focus. I believe you could have made the transition of your essay more fluid by describing why action must be done in order to secure the market economically and how solving the problems experienced will make the Dangwa Market thrive without highlighting too much on the parking slots and other concerns. A few changes would help make your essay spectacular and using the information you have gathered from your visit to Dangwa would have been much more captivating for readers. Like if you have described what you saw in the market which would show us firsthand experience of the place. Generally, this is truly a must read for those who do not know about Dangwa and the beauty it creates unknown to us all.

I found the essay very informative, shedding light on certain aspects not usually known by most people. However, I found that there was a lack of fluidity in the transitions on certain points. Additionally, I had a hard time focusing on your subject. I initially thought the essay was about the problems of the vendors of Dangwa, however, there were instances wherein there was more focus on other aspects such as the consumers' problem of finding a parking space, the process of delivery of the flowers, etc. Nonetheless, I commend you for giving an in-depth take on the Dangwa Flower Market. I certainly was able to gain newfound knowledge on the location, situation of the vendors, and processes of flower shipments.
ReplyDeleteThis essay offered an interesting vignette on the microcosm that is the Dangwa flower market. The dry tone aside, I could still get a good general glimpse of the social life, specifically the problems that plague the vendors. The research was sufficient to support the thesis of the essay. Moreover, the information was presented in an objective and straightforward manner which tied into the overall tone of the essay. On the other hand, a sense of connection was missing which could have added a sense of heart and humanity to the market.
ReplyDeleteThe essay is written in a very coherent and articulate manner. The objective description of Dangwa allows the reader to be informed about its nature as a flower market, although it is suggested to add more tone in the way details are given. The information about Dangwa Flower Market is evidently well-researched and examined. Over all, the essay is very informative and well composed.
ReplyDeleteIt is evident that extensive research was conducted. However, it is difficult for one to find the main point of the essay upon reading it for the first time. This is probably due to the thesis statement not being entirely clear. Another problem is the fluidity of the transitions since they feel too abrupt. Aside from the technical problems, I, as a reader was able to obtain a newfound appreciation of the the flower market in Dangwa. So kudos to you for that effect.
ReplyDeleteThe essay was very detailed and intricate. It was very evident that the writer researched well on the given topic; thus, making the article more informative. At the start of the article, the writer gave a very thorough description on Dangwa, and what Dangwa Flower Market offers. Subsequently, the writer switches to talk about more pressing matters such as the workers in Dangwa market. I appreciated that the writer tackled on about other topics other than the market it self. And so, the article gave me a new perspective and useful insight on the people in the market. However, after reading the article, I had a hard time understanding some parts since it can be too redundant and not entirely needed to build the focus of the article. Furthermore, I wanted to see more evidence, sources, and other instances to prove the main idea and to support anything you wanted to say, as to not sound opinionated. Regardless, I congratulate you for writing about a very commendable topic and I enjoyed reading all your insights about Dangwa. Like previously said, I gained alot of substantial information since it made me reminisce and want to go back to the market. Good job and keep it up!
ReplyDeleteThis essay easily provides the reader a glimpse of Dangwa: of how and why it came to be the one-stop flower market it is today. The depth of its content further suggests to readers that although the Dangwa market displays far from perfect operational environment not immediately distinguished by most clients, the vendors and merchandisers behind the great Dangwa strive ceaselessly to uphold the market's value through the decades. A more fluid transition between distant subtopics would encourage a more effortless delivery of the piece.
ReplyDeleteThe topic is quite interesting, especially since I had never heard of Dangwa prior to this; however, I find that the article does not talk enough about the physical surroundings of Dangwa. Was it crowded? How many stores and vendors were actually selling around the place? I also feel that that there are are better word choice for several instances in the article. Overall, it was quite interesting, but at the same time it feels a bit incomplete.
ReplyDeleteThe article was very informative. However, I noticed that some of the ideas in the article was quite repetitive, like the difficulty of the vendors to obtain flowers due to the traffic. It would be better to also write about the positive side of Dangwa, instead of focusing on the bad factors. Overall, the article is a great guide for first-timers and/or people who have never been to Dangwa.
ReplyDeleteThe article shows a very good understanding and feel for the place being talked about. I noticed some flaws however mostly in the structure of the article. These flaws are mostly grammar related and not that big of a deal for the article as a whole. I feel that the article is very informative but is lacking more in depth rather than actual content. The article talks about the difficulties of parking and the abundance of flower shops but doesn't really give concrete examples so that is where I feel this article could have done better. As a whole, I still very much enjoyed reading this article and would definitely visit Dangwa for any flower related emergencies I may have in the future.

ReplyDeleteHey Laura well done on a well written article. I just wanted to suggest maybe you should explore other 'go to' flower shops in the metro and find out why each flower shop has its own set of loyal costumers. Is it because of price only or does location, variety, and what not? There's no doubt in my mind that Dangwa is probably the smartest choice to go to if one is looking for flowers, but it does seem very hard to reach. So factoring all these things in, is it still the go to place?
ReplyDeleteI just want to thank you for sharing your information and your site or blog this is simple but nice Information I’ve ever seen i like it i learn something today. Flowers delivery manila
